BFF Manual

At last, a very "user friendly" guide for teachers, counselors, and other child mentors that offers clear and easy, step-by-step instructions for leading a successful group process that helps children to reduce negative behaviors and enhance positive social interactions. More importantly, through this Be Friendship Focused (BFF) group encounter, children learn the ways to create a positive sense of personal power that can sustain them through life. Included in the BFF Group manual are philosophical overviews that explain concepts and goals; scripted samples that are helpful to refer to when presenting ideas; creative and fun group exercises; and sample forms.

Our children are invaluable. The course of society is predicted by the character and values of its people. There is a growing deep concern regarding relational aggression and the terrible life-long effects of this upon our children's sense of happiness and achievement in school. Within our schools, there is an urgency to fulfill a commitment that complies with the set of standards for education. All too often, educational pursuits are stymied when children encounter emotional set backs or turmoil, when they feel overwhelmed, and when they are in despair. If a child does not feel socially accepted, physically and emotionally safe, or if a child feels that in order to survive the schools social climate, he or she must compromise personal values and good behavior; and if a child's feelings of self-worth or personal foundation is weak, his or her ability to learn may be compromised. Therefore, a response to intervention or RTI method must be considered and implemented.

The underlying premise that fuels the outcome of the BFF group is the understanding that all forms of bullying whether acts of verbal or physical aggression, psychological intimidation, and/or social exclusion, stem from the participant's lack of positive self-regard or true sense of personal strength. The term "participants" refers to the "bully", the "target" and the "bystander(s)."

Self-confidence is synonymous with emotional survival. A healthy self-confidence allows children to reach out to others, to care, to be hopeful, to make sound decisions, to dream, and to dare to be their best
